Sumer Travel Guide
It’s “Summertime,” and the travelin’ is easy, so we may not see you until September. In the interim, here is a travel guide of sorts:
Your summer urge to be “On the Road Again” arises in part from your sense that “Life is a Highway,” that your existence leads to some desirable, discoverable destination. And each trip in your speeding car on sunny days—with a killer soundtrack blasting away—becomes a mini-lifetime in which getting there is half the fun.
But deep down you realize things could turn brutal in bad weather, dense traffic, or desert stretches. You might even get lost on this highway. So consider some helpful signposts, courtesy of a people who went on the longest and worst summer trip in history, looking for the kingdom of God:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart . . .
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths (Prov. 3:5-6).
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my eye upon you (Ps. 32:8).
If I take the wings of morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
even there . . . your right hand shall hold me (Ps. 139:9-10).
It is the Lord who goes before you. He will not
leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be
dismayed (Deut. 31:8).
The Israelites eventually reached the Promised Land, but mistook it for their final destination, until Jesus came along to tell them, “Behold, the kingdom of God is in your midst” (Luke 17:21).
So have fun as you Karaoke down the road, but keep Jesus close. Then you won't get lost because you'll be carrying your destination with you as you go.
