Foreign Missions

Purpose & Mission Statement

The energizing principle and foundation of our work comes from Jesus’s words known as The Great Commission in which he tells his followers, “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20).  Our desire is to establish and nourish local, indigenous, self-supporting churches in specifically targeted fields throughout the world. We also seek to integrate mission efforts into activities in our home congregation that provide opportunities for member involvement in mission efforts of either a local, domestic, or foreign nature with the goal of spiritual growth.

Individual Missions

Supported Programs

The College Church supports many individuals, couples, and their families who have answered the call to connect with others around the world. The congregation has built strong teams to accomplish that purpose. While we support mission efforts throughout the world, our emphasis has traditionally been for east Africa, particularly Zambia, and for Europe. Today, however, the reach is widening to other parts of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. For an introduction to the missionaries we sponsor, search by region on our menu to see the work being done around the world and to read about the people and their families who are serving.
In addition to supporting individuals, College Church also sponsors ministries such as Avanti Italia. Recruiting individuals who will commit to two years of living at the Bible school in Florence, Italy and teaching English to Italians, this work seeks to provide a service to local people while making contacts who are interested in studying the Bible. As the sponsor of this group, College Church has a long-standing commitment to the work that has brought many to Christ through the years. While Avanti is the largest program of support, we have many other good programs that receive partial funding from College Church.

Finances

Oversight

An annual budget for international missions at around 470,000 dollars makes so many works possible, with approximately twenty-seven individuals and groups receiving varying amounts of support. This includes sixteen missionary individuals or couples in the field, with College Church sponsoring five of them. To sponsor means that all funds are channeled through the sponsor who usually gives the bulk of support.  Others work with missions but are not living in the mission field, and yet other contributions go to programs and organizations. These are all included in the annual budget apart from the special contribution given on Great Commission Sunday, which annually raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for long-term foreign missions and short-term missions for members and University students.
This vital work of the church is overseen by the Missions Committee, a group of men and women who have a particular interest in mission work. The committee is headed by six elders with Fred Jewell as committee chair and includes other elders and members.  They usually meet on Sunday afternoons once a month to conduct business and oversee programs. Anyone interested in working with the committee should contact one of the elders to become a participating member.

What Can You Do?

You don’t have to be on the Missions committee to be an important part of the ministry. Missionaries need and covet your prayers and messages as they labor so far from home. This website provides a short bio and report on our sponsored missionaries and provides contact information so that we can send a word of encouragement and help them stay connected to our congregation.
