LOGISTICAL CHALLENGES

Planning and coordinating for weekly worship is complex because our services require the participation of at least 80 men. The Worship Committee selects song leaders, scripture readers, those leading in prayers, and those making announcements. Other aspects of worship supervised by deacons and overseen by the ministry include communion services and selection of ushers. The Committee also regularly consults with the congregation's ministry staff for its input into implementing meaningful worship activities.

SUNDAY MORNING ITEMS

Every Sunday you will see several or all of these items during our worship services.

Communion

The breaking of bread and sharing of the cup is an essential practice for the body of Christ. It is a moment of dedicated communion with God and a pause in our worship as we reflect on His gruesome death and ultimate salvation for His disciples. This command comes from Christ, as read in Matthew 26, Mark 14, and Luke 22, and Jesus' earliest followers can be seen participating in this same practice in Acts 2:42 and 20:7.

Scriptural Message

Christian worship has always been accompanied by teaching. This is a commandment and an example given by our Scriptures (I.e. Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:42; 1 Timothy 4:13). Each Sunday different passages from the Bible are read, taught, and applied by our preaching minister so that we may grow as a community in obedience and knowledge of God. Please join us Sunday morning or evening if you're interested in hearing one of these messages.

Reading of Scripture

In addition to an expository message our congregation participates in the public reading of scripture. This example is provided by many of the faithful throughout the Bible including Jesus who read publicly in the Synagogue (Luke 4:16-20). The Apostle Paul also tells Timothy in 1 Tim. 4:13 to give attention to the public reading of Scripture in his pastoral advice. Each Sunday a different member of our congregation is given an opportunity to lead this reading.

Prayer

Throughout Scripture we are given the command and example to pray. In our public assembly we pray as a family, bringing before God our gratitude, worship, needs, and requests. We also have special prayers over the newborn, the baptized, and shepherds. The end of every service is closed in prayer which allows us to finish our worship in conversation with God.

Acapella Worship

Our congregation participates in acapella worship which means we do not utilize instruments during any of our services. This practice takes its cue from the early Church who did not use instruments during their worship. Other scriptural clues provide examples of worship being expressed in terms of singing, which gives us the motivation to honor God with our voices (Ephesians 5:19).

Announcements

While we are gathered as a community we take a moment to provide updates and announcements. This internal communication is vital to the life of our congregation as we often use the announcements to keep our Church family updated on ministerial and personal information.

MEET THE MINISTER

Jordan Guy | Preaching Minister

"Hello! I’m the Preaching Minister at College Church. It is my pleasure every Sunday morning to get to share a message from God’s Word that is relevant for your life and mine.

During the week, I teach Bible and Ministry classes to the greatest students in the world at Harding University. My mentors in the faith at Freed-Hardeman University (B.A.), Harding School of Theology (M.A. OT, M.Div.), and Asbury Theological Seminary (Ph.D.) taught me to always have one foot in academic ministry and one foot in church ministry. I am blessed to have a home-making wife of twenty-years, Taylor, who educates our three children—Abby, Ezra, and Iris—full-time. Together, we five Guys enjoy hiking new trails, playing board games, and dabbling in local theatre (them more so than me, but it’s growing on me).

Many people have fallen in love with Jesus, but have not yet found a church to plug in to. My passion in life is to help everyone find their place in the body of Christ. Let College Church be your next stop, your final stop, in finding your purpose, your community, your forever home."
